Dr. P. M. Yuen
Department of Obstetric & Gynaecology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

MEA can be applied for treatment of menorrhagia by ablating the endometrial lining with heat generated by a microwave applicator inserted into the uterus. It can be done under general or local anaesthesia.
At energy of 9.2 GHz, the depth of penetration is about 5-6 mm.
It can be used in presence of fibroid or uterine polyp.
The short term success rate for control of menorrhagia is about 90%.
